The Therapy That’s Helping People Suffering From Food Allergies

Longreads

— Is it possible to get over a peanut allergy? In Stanford Medicine Magazine, Melanie Thernstrom reports on how oral immunotherapy (OIT) is helping to fix food allergies. Thernstrom’s son Kieran was allergic to eggs and nuts before going through OIT, and now can eat the foods without his parents worrying:

“For everyone who has stayed in the study, the treatment has been 100 percent successful,” says Nadeau. “It turns out that everyone’s immune system is capable of adapting — and surprisingly, it is as true of adults as children.” She and her team now have an eight-year study of OIT — the longest record in the United States — in which they found that everyone who was compliant with the treatment and continued to eat the foods has kept their allergies from returning.

What happens if the patients stop eating the foods altogether? Nadeau recently published the results

(JACKSON POLLACK) POLENTA WITH AUTUMN SQUASH AND POMEGRANATE MOLASSES

this is a must try!

The Garum Factory

Polenta with Autumn Squash-9749

Who flipped the switch?  After weeks of height-of-summer salads and cookies suddenly here we are, plunged into nights when you need a jacket.  I grilled a dozen ears of corn last Thursday, alone at home, nursing a scotch on our deck in the dark, except when I raised the lid of our grill to turn the earns and and propel the toasty aroma of charred husks and corn silk into the neighborhood.  See!  See!  Still here!  I felt like a man sailing north, ignoring the portents of ice in the water and cries from the shore: Turn back!  The passage will close!  I want to squeeze as much grilled corn and fresh tomatoes out of the season as I can, even as their days drop faster than pages from the calendar in Citizen Kane.  In case you haven’t noticed, winter squashes have appeared in the farmers market

Day 7, Greek Island 3 Rhodes

Rhodes is an island in Greece, located in the eastern Aegean Sea. It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands, both in land area and population.
Before hitting the island,as usual we docked for a sea dip, southeast of Athens and just off the Anatolian coast of Turkey.

IMG_5295.JPGSea dive, Sun and Beer gave way to our much awaited meal on-board. And this time round our Chef had worked his way up for a standing ovation literally.
Sea Bass wrapped in sea salt and cooked to perfection.

Sailing in the Same Boat, day 5

So eight of us, mostly in our early 40’s and the others just getting there, all working hard & eating hard, get lucky with a 4 day sailing trip in a private Yacth: Tatiana. Neither one of us Super Rich nor Famous, got a chance of a lifetime while literally ‘sailing in the same boat‘.

IMG_5039-1.JPGTatiana, was docked at Yalikavak (a small island off Bodrum) all dressed to kill and fully stocked up with cheese , cakes, cookies, coffee, cutlery, chef, crew and much much more.
With this grandeur a welcome, this epitome of luxury was ready to sail south of the Aegean Sea.

IMG_5047-0.JPG Sailing 2 miles away from the cost of Bodrum, the first island we stopped at was Kos, in Greece.
Along the way, our Turkish Chef cooked us an excellent meal.

Fried Mullet Fish served with Kidney beans/ Red Mullet and a salad made of Purslane leaves ( the texture of these leaves was soft and taste slightly sweet, these leaves would come quite close to baby spinach In my opinion) and Terin Potatoes (a baked dish with traditional Danish blue cheese mixed with milk, egg and floor)

The day followed with some water sports in the clear blues, both water and sky and ended with a Greek Meal in the island (pictures of which I have already shared in my last post).

See you from the next island soon.

A FooD’ate with the Thadhanis’

my first restaurant review on the blog!

Indian Born Confused Gourmet

This is my first restaurant review (post creating my blog) but surely not my first food’ate with this family from Delhi.

#nimalthadhani (masie in-law) #mohanthadhani (her husband) #shaanthandhani (son) are ardent foodies, committed to eating in style anytime and in any part of the world. Infact, if you’ve read my introduction on the blog “Chief? Mio?”, this family has been integral to start my love affair with FOOD & COOKING. I attribute a lot of my culinary skills, my palate, my recipe’s to this ‘adventurous about food’ couple . They are not only my blog’s enthusiastic followers, but also very motivating & inspiring. Both are great chefs, but their fight for who wears a better hat is never ending!

In my recent visit to Delhi, the four of us met at this contemporary yet a regional food cafĂ© called #CafĂ© Lota (not quite figured why it’s called so). While the
